出典SOURCES
432 score observations, 346 list placements across 12 lists, 15 awards and 238 novelty statistics — every one with a retrieval date and a link back. Below: what each source covers, what was deliberately left out, and the two lists of caveats that are kept apart on purpose.
網羅COVERAGEfilms rated, of the canonical 38
A source needs 30 of 38 to be a pillar input. Everything below the bar is carried and shown but does not feed the ranking — the reasoning is in the method.
所在地TWO LOCATION DATASETSboth kept, disagreement flagged
Wikidata's narrative location (P840) and a hand compile of each film's settings were built independently, and they turn out to be complementary rather than rival — so both are carried and disagreement is flagged instead of one silently winning. P840 is citable but thin: it gives Tokyo for Ebirah, which is set on Letchi Island, and Tokyo for All Monsters Attack, which is set in Kawasaki. It is the better answer for GMK, whose climax really is at Yokohama — which the hand compile missed. Nine films still need a human call, and each of their pages says so.
| FILM | YEAR | HAND COMPILE | WIKIDATA P840 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Shin Godzilla | 2016 | Tokyo, Kamata, Kamakura | Asia |
| Godzilla, Mothra and King Ghidorah: Giant Monsters All-Out Attack | 2001 | Tokyo, Yaizu, Mount Myoko | Yokohama |
| Godzilla vs. Mechagodzilla II | 1993 | Kyoto, Adonoa Island | Tokyo |
| Godzilla vs. Mothra | 1992 | Yokohama, Infant Island | Tokyo |
| Godzilla 2000: Millennium | 1999 | Nemuro, Tokai, Shinjuku | Tokyo |
| Godzilla vs. SpaceGodzilla | 1994 | Fukuoka, Birth Island | Japan, Tokyo, Kobe, Kumamoto |
| Ebirah, Horror of the Deep | 1966 | Letchi Island | Tokyo |
| Godzilla Raids Again | 1955 | Osaka, Iwato Island | Japan |
| All Monsters Attack | 1969 | Kawasaki, Monster Island | Tokyo |
欠陥OPEN DEFECTS0 — things that are wrong and can be fixed
DEFECT
Nothing open. Every known error or unknown has been closed. What remains under permanent constraints is not a backlog — those items have no action that would close them, so this worklist is genuinely empty rather than merely unexamined.
制約PERMANENT CONSTRAINTS5 — properties of the sources, not a worklist
The test for which list an item belongs in: name the action that would close it. If the answer is acquire data nobody ever created or make a moving number stop moving, it is a constraint. A non-empty constraint list is not a sign of incompleteness.
CONSTRAINT
Two films have no Tomatometer at all
RT does not compute one below 5 critic reviews. The Return of Godzilla has 1 review and Godzilla Against Mechagodzilla has 4, so both carry a Popcornmeter and no critic score at all — tomatometer and critic_average_rating are both null. Never impute a zero: an absent Tomatometer is an absence of critics, not a negative verdict.
CONSTRAINT
Two different RT audience populations, and RT publishes only one per film
The four MonsterVerse-era films carry RT's VERIFIED audience score; all 36 others carry ALL. Verified skews higher because it counts only confirmed ticket buyers. Confirmed unresolvable: RT exposes no ALL-type score for a film that has a VERIFIED one — the /reviews/all-audience page lists reviews but publishes no second aggregate. Treat the four MonsterVerse audience scores as a separate series, not as points on the same scale.
CONSTRAINT
Metacritic drifts under you
Shin Godzilla reads 68/14 on Wikipedia, 67 in Screen Rant's 2022 piece and 66/15 on the live page today. Every score in scores.csv carries a retrieved date for this reason.
CONSTRAINT
Showa-era yen figures are sparse and one is self-contradictory
data/japan_boxoffice.csv now labels every Japanese revenue figure as either 配給収入 (rentals, 1954–1995) or 興行収入 (gross, 1999–), so the two are no longer silently mixed. But only 4 of the 15 Showa films have a published yen figure at all, and Mothra vs. Godzilla's 15.5億 cannot be right — King Kong vs. Godzilla took 3.5億 on 1,120万 admissions, so 351万 admissions cannot yield 15.5億. It is flagged SUSPECT. For cross-film comparison of the Toho films use attendance, not yen — attendance is complete, internally consistent and cross-verified.
CONSTRAINT
Filmarks n scales with recency, not quality
Filmarks launched in 2012, so Showa entries sit at 2,000–5,000 ratings against Shin Godzilla's 241,284. Godzilla 1985 rests on 194. eiga.com is worse: Tokyo S.O.S. is a 3.2 built from twenty reviews.

2. Critic aggregate scores
| Source | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes — individual film pages | 40 films | Fetched one page per film; slugs recorded in films.csv. Tomatometer + review count. |
| Rotten Tomatoes editorial, "All Godzilla Movies Ranked" | https://editorial.rottentomatoes.com/guide/all-godzilla-movies-ranked/ | Cross-check; RT orders this list by adjusted Tomatometer, which is why its order differs from raw % |
| Metacritic — individual film pages | 11 films | Metascore + critic count. Coverage is limited to US-theatrical releases. |
| Screen Rant, "Best Godzilla Movies According to Metacritic" (Ben Hathaway, 2022-04-21) | https://screenrant.com/best-godzilla-movies-ranked-metacritic-score/ | Historical cross-check on Metascores |

3. User / audience aggregate scores
| Source | Region | Coverage | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rotten Tomatoes Popcornmeter | EN | 35 of 38 | Rating counts are bucketed by RT ("5,000+"), not exact |
| Metacritic User Score | EN | 10 | /10 scale, exact user counts |
| IMDb user rating | EN | 38 | /10, largest samples of any source |
| Letterboxd | EN | 38 + 5 re-edits | Weighted average /5 with exact n |
| FilmAffinity | ES | 38 of 38 | Spanish-speaking audience, /10. Small samples on Showa (121–485). Matched by title + verified year |
| AlloCiné (spectateurs) | FR | 35 of 38 | French audience, /5. IDs via Wikidata P1265 — AlloCiné's own search renders links client-side and yields nothing to a fetch. Very small samples on older films (11–48) |
| AlloCiné (presse) | FR | 6 of 38 | French critics. Fails the ≥30 bar — display only. Does not strengthen the critics pillar |
| Douban | CN | 13 of 38 | Chinese audience, /10. Incomplete — see below. Display only |
| Filmarks (フィルマークス) | JP | 38 + Minus One/C | Japan's largest consumer review service, /5, with rating counts |
| eiga.com (映画.com) | JP | 10 | Japanese; no coverage before 2003, with review counts |
Every row in scores.csv carries a region column (global-en / jp) so the two audiences can be weighted deliberately rather than blended by accident.
Letterboxd retrieval
Letterboxd never puts the average on the film page — it is served from letterboxd.com/csi/film/{slug}/rating-histogram/, which 403s to automated clients. Retrieved through an authenticated browser session, parsing the literal "Weighted average of X based on N ratings" string. This supersedes the ten second-hand values previously taken from a Collider article; an earlier direct fetch appeared to return 4.5 for the 1954 film, which was a misread of the fan count — the real figure is 4.07.
Douban: identified but not harvested
Douban rate-limited its search after ~15 queries (error_info: 搜索访问太频繁) and then escalated to a full anti-bot interstitial redirecting subject pages to sec.douban.com. The block is on the session, not the URL pattern, and did not clear.
The hard part is solved. data/douban_ids.csv holds the Douban subject ID for 39 of 40 films, resolved through Wikidata property P4529 — Douban's own search is a dead end and is not needed. harvest_douban.md has the finishing procedure: serial requests ≥2s apart, with a guard that stops on the first sec.douban.com redirect. Roughly two minutes of wall clock.
This matters more than any weighting choice. Douban rates the 1998 Emmerich film 7.2/10 on 88,657 ratings — above where it places Shin Godzilla, Godzilla 2014 and every MonsterVerse entry, against 20% from RT critics and 2.31/5 on Letterboxd. That divergence currently has zero influence on the ranking.
Filmarks retrieval
Matched on Japanese title + release date + runtime via filmarks.com search cards. 4K-remaster re-releases carry separate Filmarks entries with their own, self-selected and usually higher scores (the GMK 4K remaster reads 4.1 against 3.5 for the original release) — those were excluded. Counts come from each page's own og:description (レビュー数:N件 / 平均スコア:★★★★X点), which IS in the fetched HTML — the .c-content__count element is a Vue placeholder, which is what defeated the first attempt. Trap: Filmarks exposes two different counts and labels both レビュー. JSON-LD's aggregateRating.reviewCount is written reviews only and is far smaller (Shin Godzilla 33,260) than the rating count the average is computed over (241,284). The og:description figure is the correct sample size.
3b. Awards and contemporaneous critical placement (data/awards.csv)
| Body | Films | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Kinema Junpo Best Ten (Japanese films) | 3 | Japan's authoritative critics' poll, running since 1924. Godzilla (1954) placed 8th; Shin Godzilla 2nd in 2016; Godzilla Minus One 8th in 2023 (97th). This is the only contemporaneous critical verdict in the dataset — every other critic signal here is retrospective and Anglophone. |
| Japan Academy Film Prize | 2 | Shin Godzilla took Picture of the Year at the 40th (7 wins from 11 noms); Minus One won 8 from a leading 12 at the 47th |
| Academy Awards | 1 | Minus One, Best Visual Effects, 96th — first Oscar for the franchise |
| Eiga Hiho (映画秘宝) | 1 | Voted by 100+ critics and film writers. Made Godzilla Minus One their #1 film of 2023, ahead of TAR. |
| Eiga Geijutsu (映画芸術) | 2 | A panel of critics, directors, screenwriters and producers, scored so that Worst votes subtract from Best votes. Put Minus One 3rd on their WORST ten for 2023. Shin Godzilla missed their 2016 Best Ten entirely (won by In This Corner of the World), though it placed 2nd in Kinema Junpo the same year. |
| Golden Raspberry Awards | 1 | Godzilla (1998), Worst Remake or Sequel |
The Japanese critical split on Godzilla Minus One
Three Japanese critic polls, one film, one year:
| Poll | Electorate | Verdict on Minus One |
|---|---|---|
| 映画秘宝 Eiga Hiho | 100+ critics and film writers | #1 BEST of 2023 |
| キネマ旬報 Kinema Junpo | ~120 industry voters | #8 best of 2023 |
| 映画芸術 Eiga Geijutsu | critics, directors, screenwriters, producers | #3 WORST of 2023 |
Eiga Geijutsu is famously contrarian — the same poll placed Drive My Car 4th-worst in 2021 — so this is a house position as much as a verdict. But it is a real one, from real Japanese critics, and any model that reduces "the Japanese critical view" to one number will erase it.
Kinema Junpo's own database (kinenote.com) returns HTTP 403 on its search path, so Best Ten placements were sourced from Kinema Junpo's announcement pages and secondary Japanese coverage.
4. Single-source journalist rankings (data/rankings.csv)
| List | Publication | Author | Published | Films | Scope |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
slant_2024 | Slant Magazine | Rob Humanick | 2024-03-29 (orig. 2021-03-24) | 43 | Includes US/Italian re-edits — the most inclusive list found |
indiewire_2024 | IndieWire | Wilson Chapman, with David Ehrlich | 2024-03-28 | 38 | All canonical films; US re-edits explicitly excluded |
awardswatch_2024 | AwardsWatch | Kevin L. Lee | 2024-04-01 | 38 | All canonical films |
grunge_2022 | Grunge | Nicholas Vrchoticky | 2022-02-03 | 34 | Anime trilogy ranked as a single block |
variety_2024 | Variety | Matthew Chernov | 2024-03-28 | 35 | Live-action only; anime trilogy excluded |
paste_2024 | Paste Magazine | Jim Vorel | 2024-03-28 | 35 | Live-action only; anime trilogy deliberately excluded |
tomsguide_2019 | Tom's Guide | Mohammad Tabari | 2019-06-01 | 33 | As of mid-2019; anime trilogy represented by Planet of the Monsters only |
screenrant_2019 | Screen Rant | Nicholas Raymond | 2019-05-25 | 30 | Pre-dates Minus One, GvK, GxK, anime trilogy |
denofgeek_showa_2019 | Den of Geek | Don Kaye | 2019-10-29 | 15 | Showa era only — partial-franchise, excluded from percentile means |
denofgeek_mv_2021 | Den of Geek | Don Kaye & David Crow | 2021-04-02 | 4 | MonsterVerse only. Ordering now resolved — see below. Excluded from percentile means |
netlab_2024 | ねとらぼリサーチ (ITmedia) | 編集部 | 2024-08-27 | 30 | JAPANESE PUBLIC POLL, not a critic list — list_kind = public_poll. 1,022 votes, polled 2024-03-17/23. Covers the 30 live-action Toho films. Excluded from the critic-list mean; surfaced separately as jp_poll_rank. |
collider_2024_partial | Collider | Jeremy Urquhart | 2024-03-29 | 38 (10 captured) | Incomplete — the article serves only positions 38-29; excluded from percentile means |
Eight of these are full-franchise lists and feed critics_list_percentile_mean in master_table.csv: slant, indiewire, awardswatch, grunge, variety, paste, tomsguide, screenrant. Den of Geek (Showa-only) and Collider (partial) are carried in rankings.csv but excluded from that mean.
Retrieval note on Variety and IndieWire
Both are Penske Media properties and redirect automated clients to a TollBit paywall (HTTP 402) — direct fetch, headless browser, and the in-app browser all get gated. They were retrieved through the user's own signed-in Chrome, which is served the real page. Variety's article is a single page that rewrites the URL per entry via pushState (e.g. /lists/godzilla-movies-ranked/all-monsters-attack-1969/), so every entry is in the DOM at once. If you need to re-scrape either, use a real browser session; automated fetching will not work.
Ranking lists identified but still NOT retrievable
| List | URL | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Collider, ranks 28-1 | https://collider.com/godzilla-movies-ranked/ | Not served at all — established across six independent checks. (1) The 676KB page contains only positions 38-29; "Shin Godzilla", "Destoroyah", "Biollante" and "Hedorah" each appear ZERO times in the raw HTML. (2) /2/, ?page=2, ?view=all and /amp/ return the identical ten entries. (3) Full scrolling in a real signed-in browser adds nothing. (4) The page's JSON-LD contains three Movie objects and no ItemList — Collider's own structured data does not enumerate 38 either. (5) No WordPress REST API (/wp-json/* 404s; Valnet uses a custom CMS). (6) No content API fires on scroll — only ad and analytics beacons. Its own analytics payload reports publishDate 2023-05-03, republishDate 2024-03-28, so the March 2024 republish most likely trimmed the article. Permanently partial; stop trying. |
| Yahoo!映画 (movies.yahoo.co.jp) | https://movies.yahoo.co.jp/ | Service ended 2023-07-31 and was folded into Yahoo!検索; the standalone per-film 5-star averages no longer exist as a scrapeable source. eiga.com was substituted as the second Japanese opinion. |
| Kinenote search | https://www.kinenote.com/main/public/search/ | HTTP 403 on the search path. Detail pages DO load in a real browser, but their 平均評点 is a KINENOTE user score out of 100, not a critic score — not worth harvesting given Filmarks already covers all 38 with far larger samples. |
| kinejun.com film database | https://www.kinejun.com/cinema/view/98690 | Kinema Junpo's old per-film score pages (Minus One reportedly carried 70点) are gone: the site migrated to kinejun.jp and the /cinema/view/ paths now 404. |
| Natalie (映画ナタリー) | https://natalie.mu/eiga/news/558452 | Sits behind a human-verification CAPTCHA. Not attempted; the same 映画芸術 2023 lists were sourced elsewhere. |
A Japanese critic list of the franchise does not appear to exist
Searched across Japanese film media, magazines and aggregators. Japanese film culture produces polls (ねとらぼ, みんなのランキング, 日本映画専門チャンネル's 2014 ゴジラ総選挙) and annual best-tens (キネマ旬報, 映画秘宝, 映画芸術) — but not the Anglophone "one writer ranks all 38 films" listicle, which is a format of the English-language film web. The nearest equivalents found:
| Candidate | What it actually is | Usable? |
|---|---|---|
| ねとらぼリサーチ, 2024 | Public poll, 1,022 votes, 30 films, complete ordering | Yes — added as public_poll |
| みんなのランキング (ranking.net) | User poll, 3,146 votes / 845 users, but its 34 entries include non-Godzilla films (モスラ 1996) | Not added — polluted universe |
| ゴジラ総選挙, 日本映画専門チャンネル, 2014 | Hybrid: 5 celebrity judges + 200 venue fans + 113,747 online votes, but only a final top 4 (1 Biollante, 2 Godzilla 1954, 3 Destoroyah, 4 Mothra vs. Godzilla) from a 28-film shortlist | Not added — no full ordering published |
| 映画格付 (cinema-rank.net) | Aggregator, not an authored list | Not added |
Den of Geek MonsterVerse — ordering resolved
Previously excluded because two extraction passes disagreed on direction. Settled by reading the standfirst directly: "our staff votes on the definitive ranking of the American MonsterVerse films, from worst to best", with headings running 4 > 3 > 2 > 1 down the page. So their #1 is Godzilla: King of the Monsters (2019) and their worst is Godzilla (2014). Kong: Skull Island held rank 2 and is omitted from rankings.csv as a non-Godzilla film, but list_size stays 4 so the percentile maths remain correct.
5. Novelty / obscure statistics (data/stats_novelty.csv)

| MonsterVerse screen time (2019, 2021, 2024) | Screen Rant — https://screenrant.com/godzilla-x-kong-godzilla-screentime-record-lowest/ | Different measurer; do not compare too finely against the Joker Cluster numbers |

| Narrative locations (30 films) | Wikidata property P840, via the wbgetentities API — https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Property:P840 | The real-world places each film is SET in. This is the upstream source behind moviescenemap.com, which was itself unreachable: it serves an invalid TLS certificate (ERR_SSL_PROTOCOL_ERROR) and its plain-HTTP fallback was blocked by an ISP security filter as potentially unsafe. Data taken from the source rather than the aggregator; no security control was bypassed. NOT filming locations — Wikidata's P915 for this franchise is almost entirely just "Japan" and carries no information. Quality is uneven and flagged per row in data/narrative_locations.csv: fictional (Janjira), too-vague (a whole country or continent), vessel (USS Saratoga). 58 of 66 rows are usable. |
| Godzilla's official height per film | Screen Rant, Nicholas Raymond, 2021-03-30 — https://screenrant.com/godzilla-height-tall-each-movie-explained/ | Studio-published in-universe figures |
| Minus One height (50.1m) | Wikizilla — https://wikizilla.org/wiki/Godzilla_(Godzilla_Minus_One) | Second-shortest Godzilla ever, 0.1m taller than the Showa suit |
6. Caveats
Generated from gzconfig.py by build_caveats.py — edit the caveats there, not here.
Read the two lists differently. Defects are a worklist and should trend to empty. Constraints are permanent properties of the sources — they are instructions to the ranking algorithm, not unfinished work. A non-empty constraint list is not a sign the dataset is incomplete.
Open defects (0)
None. Every known error or unknown has been closed — see Resolved below.
Permanent constraints (5)
Nothing closes these. Design the model around them.

Resolved
- RT audience counts were banded — Resolved.
likedCount + notLikedCountfrom the scorecard JSON IS the Popcornmeter's denominator — verified across 8 films, it recomputes every published score to within 0.5pp.sample_sizenow carries that exact number. RT's displayed band is a different, larger population and is badly misleading: Son of Godzilla displays “5,000+” against a real denominator of 676, and The Return of Godzilla's Popcornmeter rests on 28 ratings. - Attendance was initial-run with no cumulative counterpart — Resolved. Cross-verified every figure against ja.wikipedia — all match, confirming they are initial-run. Cumulative figures for the 7 re-released films are now in data/japan_boxoffice.csv alongside them. Final Wars corrected to 1.04M; Minus One added at 5.03M.
- Japanese box office mixed rentals and gross unlabelled — Resolved into data/japan_boxoffice.csv, which labels all 30 films as 配給収入 or 興行収入. What remains is a sparsity problem, not a labelling one — see the open caveat.
- GMK's duplicate Rotten Tomatoes page — Resolved. RT has two entries; the hyphenated slug is the real one (65% off 17 critics, avg 5.60; audience 79% off 500+). The underscored slug is a near-empty duplicate with 0 critic reviews whose 96% was its AUDIENCE score. The dataset now uses the hyphenated page.
- King Kong vs. Godzilla's “disputed” attendance — Not a dispute. 11.2M is the original 1962 run; 12.55M is the official figure including re-releases. Both are correct and measure different things.
- Mothra vs. Godzilla's “wrong” gross — Not an error. ¥1.55B (ja.wikipedia) is 配給収入, distributor rentals; ¥3.2B (en.wikipedia) is estimated gross. Rentals ran roughly half of gross, so the two reconcile. Generalised into the open caveat above.
- Godzilla vs. Kong's two release dates — Confirmed: 2021-03-24 international, 2021-03-31 US theatres + HBO Max. films.csv uses the US date and the international date is noted.
- Letterboxd averages were second-hand — Resolved. All 38 canonical films plus 5 re-edits now carry Letterboxd's own weighted average and exact rating count from the rating-histogram endpoint.
- Filmarks had no sample sizes — Resolved. Every Filmarks and eiga.com row now carries an n, taken from each page's og:description.
